Committee for 2012-2013 announced
Hello and welcome to the website of FVDS. We are a charitable organisation that works with many agencies and partners to provide sporting opportunities to children, young people and adults with physical, sensory and learning disabilities.
We aim to develop, support and promote opportunities for sport and physical activity for people with a disability in the Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Stirling areas.
The history of Forth Valley Disability Sport dates back to the original Central Region Council, which took it upon themselves to provide sporting opportunities to people with disabilities. It was generally seen as an option for people to be included in a sporting environment, and this enriched the lives of a generation.
Although the council has been split into three separate authorities, the aim and desire to provide first class sporting opportunities have not wavered. In recently years, we have seen a host of athletes representating FVDS at national events, both in Scotland and Great Britain. We have also seen two of our bowlers representing Scotland on an international stage in Kuala Lumpur, America and Australia, and athletes have returned with medals from Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai in 2007. At the Beijing Paralympics, we had athletes from the area, including the gold medal winning Boccia coach, Jacqueline Lyn, who have served for numerous years within the organisation and Kieran Marting, who competed in the Great Britain Cerebral Palsy 7-aside football team.
FVDS works in partnership with SportCentral to identify athletes with potential and offer them more training opportunities through sport specific training clubs and generic support programmes. SportCentral supports athlettes to reach selection for national disability sport programmes. If you require more information on the following, please visit the SportCentral link.
2009 sees an exciting prospect of our Special Olympic athletes competing under the FVDS banner in Leicester from 25 July until 1 August. Our athletes who have been selected for these games are dedicated individuals, who put hours of training in every week to strive in their individual sport. Some of our athletes are looking further ahead to the Special Olympic World Games in 2011 and it is hoped some will be picked to represent Great Britain.
Membership is free, and all events incur a minimal charge of ?.50 to participants.
